Records consist of minutes of the Commission and its committees, 1943-1948; documents, 1943-1948, published by the Commission and its committees; records of the Research Office, 1944-1949, primarily reports, bulletins, and other printed documents, including photographs, about war crimes, and books and documents collected by the Research Office for use in investigation; files of charges submitted by member governments against ca. 37,000 German, Italian, Bulgarian, Albanian, Hungarian, Romanian, and Japanese war criminals, suspects, and material witnesses, n.d.; periodical lists of war criminals, suspects, and material witnesses with related materials compiled by the War Crimes Commission, 1945-1948, and by the Far Eastern and Pacific Sub-Commission, 1945-1946; lists of war criminals submitted by outside authorities, 1945-1948; general correspondence of the Commission, 1947-1949, including cables, primarily concerning human rights, and other topics including trial results, releases, sentences, and war criminals; transcripts, reports, and other documents of the International Tribunal for the Far East (Tokyo Trials), 1946-1948; and trial reports of national military tribunals, 1945-1947. Included among these is one 1901 trial report for the trial of Francisco Braganza by a United States military commission in Luzon, Manila, Philippines.

The United Nations War Crimes Commission's task was to collect, investigate, and record evidence of war crimes, and to report this evidence to governments concerned.
